Care Mountain home health agency in-home care experience with Alzheimer’s and Dementia in the Dallas – Fort Worth TX area was a major source of information for this blog.

Finding a stable in-home care caregiver for someone with Alzheimer’s, or another type of dementia, is often a challenge for those living in the Dallas, TX, Fort Worth, TX , Richardson, TX and Plano, TX areas. Over the past 33+ years as a provider of in-home care for Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia, I have noticed some common home health caregiver attributes highly determinant of low caregiver turnover for those working with clients having Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. These caregiver attributes involve related work experience, personality traits, passion and healthy balance in the caregiver’s personal life.

When looking into a caregiver’s Alzheimer’s and dementia home health care experience pay special attention to techniques they use to explain and manage various types of behaviors, their demonstrated ability to redirect a client and work with clients in different stages of Alzheimer’s/dementia.  The more  longevity and diversity of the caregiver’s experience in these areas, the less prone they will be to high turnover.

A caregiver whose personality brings a feeling of calm, safety and tranquility into any room they enter, tends to have the best results caregiving for Alzheimer’s/dementia, resulting in less chance of undesired caregiver turnover.  A person is increasingly prone to agitation and anxiety as cognition diminishes with dementia, making these personality traits much more effective at managing these emotions and thus minimizing their resultant undesirable behavioral outcomes.  A person with dementia will often be hypersensitive to their immediate surrounding due to the inability to process much beyond that, so personality traits of the caregiver can have a much bigger impact.

A caregiver’s dementia care experience and personality traits are really good indicators of ability.  A current passion for caregiving for dementia and healthy balance in the caregiver’s personal life are good indicators of motivation, which when combined with ability gives us the best indicator of results – no caregiver turnover.  Many great experienced caregivers of dementia lose their passion for dementia care, which is something more easily identified through a very in-depth caregiver interview.

All the great caregivers I have known love to give of themselves to help others.  Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia tend to be at the higher levels of needed attention/care, which means a caregiver needs to be best positioned to provide this level of care/attention.  Professional caregivers too heavily taxed by matters in their personal life, are not likely to be a reliable source of giving of themselves to help others at this level of need/attention.

Some good sources of caregiver support for Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia in the Dallas, TX, Fort Worth, TX, Richardson, TX and Plano, TX areas are North Central Texas Alzheimer’s Association, Dallas & Northeast Texas Alzheimer’s Association, UT Southwestern Geriatric Internal Medicine, Baylor Scott & White Senior Health Center, American Best Geriatric & Multispecialty Group, Prime MD Geriatrics, Promontory Geriatrics, Texas Institute For Neurological Disorders, North Texas Neurology & Neuropathy, Lone Star Neurology and Baylor Scott & White Neurology Dallas.
