The decision to use Dallas area adult day care or Dallas area in home care is not a mutually exclusive one, as some families use both concurrently. The purpose of this article is to present some of the pros and cons of each relative to the other.
An adult day care facility provides a supervised congregate setting that your loved one may stay at during set hours during the day. Meals, activities and some limited personal assistance are offered. Some examples of local adult day cares include Friends Place, Encore Day Care, The Rose Cottage of Texas, and the James L. West Adult Day Program.
In home care is offered by a company such as Care Mountain where an aide comes to your place of stay or residence to provide companionship, general supervision, help with household chores, assistance with activities of daily living and/or care for a health condition.
One of the main advantages adult day care will tend to have over in home care is cost. Since adult day care is a congregate setting where the cost of a caregiver can be spread out among many residents, versus one on one care in home health care, you can expect to pay less for an equal amount of time used. Some of the main disadvantages of adult day care relative to home health care is the hours of service and types of care services offered are much more limited with adult day care, adult day care tends to cater more toward a population with progressed stages of dementia, and the staff to resident ratio can be high limiting personal attention that some may be needing more of.
As the owner of an in home health care company I have confidently given out the names of adult day cares to many people over the years, because in the Dallas Fort Worth area we are lucky enough to have some very good ones. Price is a main reason for referring. Most people we meet want to receive care and service at home, but their budget will not allow it, so an adult day care can be a viable option in time of need and very limited budget.
If your loved one has dementia and is reasonably compliant with minimal personal assistance needed, then an adult day care can be a great fit. Unfortunately, many require more than minimal personal assistance and at hours outside the typical Monday through Friday 7 AM to 6 PM operating hours of most adult day cares. In these cases, home health care may be a much better fit. Since most adult day cares tend to have a clientele with more progressed stages of dementia, those with earlier stages or no dementia will likely find it not a fit. Especially since the activities offered, as wonderful as they may be, may not seem appealing.
Most of us tend to benefit more when receiving extra personal attention customized to our wants and needs. Since home health care is one on on care, those folks will tend to thrive more under this type of service.
A few years back Bill called us looking for in home Alzheimer’s care in Flower Mound, TX for his wife. Bill had been dropping his wife off at a wonderful adult day care for six hours a day three days a week for the past year, and everything had been working fine till now – it gave Bill the respite he needed to better care for his wife when she was at home. Bill’s family was now urging him to give up driving, and the day care indicated his wife’s care needs were now requiring more than their facility was comfortable providing. Bill ended up replacing his wife’s hours at the adult day care with the Alzheimer’s home care service of Care Mountain being provided right in their home. The cost was slightly more, but Bill was now able to continue getting the respite he needed while ensuring all his wife’s care needs were being met.
